Currently Watching: Anime Edition – 21/07/2019

As mentioned in my introduction, I really like anime and JDramas. So, with that in mind, I decided that another series I would work on in this blog would be my currently watching series with a sub-section for anime or dramas.

I got into anime when I was eleven and a girl I knew brought a copy of Death Note into school. She told me what it was about and that there was also an anime version on YouTube (remember when you could watch all the anime you wanted on YouTube?). So, I went home that night and began marathoning the series. The rest is history with a lot of subtitles.

  1. To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts
During a war that devided the country into North and South, the outnumbered Northeners used dark arts to create monsters out of their soliders, the Incarnates. However, as time goes on these super-soliders will turn into nothing more than destructive beasts and there is only person who can stop them.

This is a shounen fantasy series that follows the daughter of an Incarnate who was killed before her very eyes as she travels alongside the Beast Hunter to learn why they must kill these creatures and what secrets have been hidden from the world.

This is a really interesting series with a lot unique designs on already familiar creatures such werewolves, the minator, and even dragons. I highly recommend this series if you’re looking for an action packed show.
  2. Journal of the Mysterious Creatures
A Chinese anime series that follows Yoshihito, a 23-year-old man who has high expections for what his life should be. After returning home from university, Yoshihito meets a lost girl in the park and discovers that she looking to rent a room in the house his parents left for him. As Yoshihito guides the young woman home, they are attacked by strange bat-like girl, but Yoshihito has no reason to be afraid as his prospective renter turns into a werewolf!

Now Yoshihito is being scouted to help keep the peace in the paranormal world and strange creatures keep turning up at his house for the open tenant positions.

This is still a fairly new series, but I’m really interested to see what direction it takes. I can already tell that’s its going to filled with a lot of choas though.
  3. Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest
Hajime Nagumo was a normal otaku until he and his classmates are all transfered into a fantasy world filled with magic, monsters, and endless possiblities. As he and his classmates are all treated like heroes, Hajime learns that unlike his stronger peers, his powers as a Synergist are nothing more than glorified blacksmithing.

When tragedy strikes and Hajime finds himself abandoned and alone in the dangerous labyrinth, he decides that he must do whatever it takes to survive.

Usually I’m not one for the Transported to a Special World storyline, but this fantasy-adventure story really peaked my interests. Not only is the development of Hajime a tension filled downward spiral, but unlike many series we only witness their normal lives and introduction to the new world through flashback, so you aren’t dealing with three or four episodes of slow worldbuilding.
  4. How Heavy are the Dumbbells You Lift?
Sakura Habiki is a high-school girl with a big appetite. When she begins to gain weight because of her eating habits, she decides that the smartest thing to do would be adding more exercise into her routine. There she runs into seemingly perfect student, Souryuuin Akemi, and discovers that not only is she a health nut, but she also has a muscle fetish!

This is a fun, light-hearted series about girls making smart decisions about their bodies and learning the ins-and-outs of healthy development and I’m so thankful that there is a genuinely educated show about this subject. It teaches correct exercise and simple ways to form a healthy diet.

Unlike other comedy-ecchi series currently airing, the ecchi side of the humour is more to do with the men’s ridiculously muscles bodies and a few boob jokes here and there.
  5. If it’s For My Daughter, I’d Even Defeat the Demon Lord
Dale is a highly skilled adventurer who, despite his youth, has made quite a reputation for himself in his field. While on a mission, Dale comes across a small demon girl abandoned in the woods. Unable to leave her behind, Dale takes the girl back to his village and becomes her adoptive father.

Dale quickly falls in love with Latina’s adorable innocence and can barely stand to be away from his sweet daughter, but why was she in the woods in the first place?

And why does she carry the mark of a criminal?

This is a super sweet and funny series about family and acceptance with Latina unknowingly challenging the thoughts and opinions of some of the most dangerous adventurers out there.
  6. Dr Stone
An unsuspecting humanity is petrified by a blinding light, and only after several millennia do survivors of this phenomenon begin to wake up.

When tough, but dumb Taiju awakens he discovers that not only is the world nothing like what he left behind, but he is also not alone. Scientist Senku has been awake for six months and has already begun research to rescue those still consumed by stone. Will Taiju and Senku succeed in saving humanity, and what risks stand in their way?

This is currently one of the most popular animes of the season and I completely understand why. This shounen-adventure has perfect balance between plot, character, and comic relief. I cannot wait to see where it goes.
  7. Fire Force
In a world where a person can suddenly be consumed by fire and turn into an Infernal, there is a special fire brigade fighting against this strange phenomenon.

Shinra Kusakabe is one of the newest recruits with the ability to produce and control fire from his feet. Through his work with his fellow Special Fire Force workers, Shinra learns the truth about the accident that took the lives of his mother and baby brother.

This is another great action show that mixes magic with every day heroes. I think this anime is going to continue to be a story filled with twists and turns that leave you on edge as you wait for the next episode.

Due to the unexpected tragedy at KyotoAnime and the subject matter of this series, Fire Force will on a short hiatus in respect for the families and friends who have lost loved ones.
  8. Cooking with Valkyries
Another Chinese anime, this series is a short but sweet story about a group of girls who live together and what they cook throughout the day. The really cool thing is that at the end of every episode, they give you the actual recipe for what they’re cooking!
  9. Maidens of the Savage Season
Following the members of the Literature Club, when one girl admits that the one thing she wants to try before she dies is sex, it unknowingly sends the members of their club on clumsy and emotional path to adulthood.

The really great thing about this series is that although the girls are united in their love for literature, their personalities couldn’t be more different. From the ridged club leader to the shy first years, the girls in the series are all uniquely designed and well thought out.

This is probably one of my favourite shows this season and I cannot wait to watch the next episode.
  10. Hakata Mentai! Pirikarako-chan
I’m going to be really honest. This is a kid’s anime. Like a legit, my four-year-old needs something to do today, kids anime. But I still love it.

This series follows Pirikarako and her friends as they enjoy yummy food and fun competitions.
  11. Bem
Based on the characters from the popular Yokai Ningen Bem, this series is introducing Bem, Bela, and Belo to a new generation.

This series follows Bem, Bela, and Belo, three humanoid yokai searching for the secret to become human and fighting for justice in the dark streets of their city.

This is still a very new series, with the next episode being released later today, but I can honestly say I’m very excited to see what comes next.

  1. Mayonaka no Occult Koumuim
Released in late Spring 2018, this series follows Miyako Arata as he begins his newly assigned job at the Shinjuku Ward Office’s Nighttime Regional Relations Department. There Miyako and his co-workers help to keep the paranormal creatures living in Tokyo secret from unsuspecting public citizens. But on his first night out, Miyako discovers something about himself that he never expected.

    He can understand the creatures.

I’m really enjoying this series and I’m glad that I have the opportunity to watch the whole show right now. Highly recommend.
  2. Dorei-ku the Animation
The SCM allows you to enslave anyone who loses a duel against you, so long as they are also wearing an SCM.

This series follows six characters who all end up involved in the world of SCM in one way or another. Whether they’re slave or master, these characters are all searching for answers about the SCM that seem to be hidden away from those who would dare use it.

I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy this series, but so far I think it’s really well done. The characters are all interesting enough to keep you interested in their own personal stories as well as the overall plot. Really looking forward to how this turns out.
  3. Hey, Your Cat Ears Are Showing!
Another short, but sweet series that follows the daily life of a man and his cat-boy roommate. This series is lovely and quite funny. I think a lot of people would enjoy it.

Wow. I am watching a lot of anime right now.
